What Is the Petrochemical Industry?

The petrochemical industry covers all industrial methods used to obtain organic chemical products from refined petroleum products and natural gas. Closely linked with many sectors such as agriculture, construction, packaging, electronics, automotive and textiles, the petrochemical industry divides its raw materials and products into three main groups:

• Aliphatics: raw materials such as ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, butylenes, butadiene and acetylene, obtained by cracking petroleum products or natural gas at high temperatures.
• Aromatics: aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylenes and naphthalene.
• Inorganics: products such as ammonia, sulphur, hydrogen cyanide and carbon black.

The main products manufactured in petrochemical plants are:

• Polyethylene (PE)
• Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
• Polystyrene (PS)
• Solvents and intermediate chemicals

Asphalt, diesel, gasoline, fuel oil, kerosene, LPG and paraffin, on the other hand, are refinery products obtained by distilling and processing crude oil in refineries. The petrochemical industry uses some of these streams (for example naphtha and LPG) as feedstock.
