Evaporators are process equipment that concentrate a product, or separate its components, by evaporating the volatile part of a solution, usually water or a solvent. What Is a Thin Film Evaporator?

A thin film evaporator is a system in which a rotating rotor spreads the feed liquid as a thin film over the heated body wall, so that the volatile component evaporates rapidly from this film. The heating medium (steam or thermal oil) circulates in the jacket surrounding the body and never comes into direct contact with the product; heat is transferred indirectly through the body wall. The system is usually operated under vacuum to lower the boiling temperature, and the evaporated component is condensed and collected in a condenser. The key advantage of thin film evaporators is that they can separate substances that are difficult to separate by conventional methods without damaging the product.

Features

Used in many industrial processes, thin film evaporators basically consist of a jacketed body and a rotor turning inside it; the vertical design is the most widely preferred. The very short contact time between the product and the heated surface, together with the highly turbulent film, allows heat-sensitive materials to be processed without degradation.

Mode of Operation

In vertical thin film evaporators, the feed liquid enters at the top of the body, tangentially to the heated surface. The rotor blades spread the liquid over the body wall to form a thin film; their movement creates waves and a highly turbulent flow in the film. This flow increases heat transfer, and the product film moves down the heated wall in a spiral path. The volatile component evaporates and is routed from the top to the condenser, while the concentrated product is discharged from the bottom of the body. As a result, separation takes place extremely quickly.
