Makfen designs and delivers turnkey paint manufacturing plant projects tailored to the customer’s product range and capacity requirements. In addition to manufacturing equipment designed specifically for the required capacity, Makfen handles process piping, in-plant installations, automation and assembly as a single supplier.

The key to consistent, repeatable quality in paint production is dispersing the pigments and fillers well in the binder and grinding down the agglomerates. Makfen therefore places the dispersion and grinding steps at the centre of the plant design.

The Paint Production Process

A typical paint production line consists of the following steps:

• Premixing: resin, solvent or water, pigments and fillers are mixed with a high-speed dissolver.
• Grinding: pigment agglomerates are ground to the required fineness in a ball mill or bead mill.
• Let-down and tinting: the ground base is completed with the remaining binder, solvent and additives in mixing tanks, and the colour is adjusted.
• Filtration and filling: the product is filtered and filled into packaging.

Ball Mill Paint Manufacturing Plants

Ball mills are cylindrical grinding systems that rotate around a horizontal axis and contain steel, porcelain or pebble balls. The inside of the shell is lined with wear-resistant materials such as very hard steel or granite. As the cylinder rotates, the balls strike each other and the shell, breaking up the pigment agglomerates through impact and attrition. The ball material and fill level are chosen according to the viscosity of the product and the required grinding fineness.

Hot Paint and Varnish Manufacturing Plants

For hot paint and varnish production, Makfen designs systems suitable for operating temperatures of up to 270 °C. In these plants, the cooking, cooling and thinning steps are designed and manufactured as a complete unit according to the process requirements: jacketed cooking vessels, the cooling system and the tanks in which the cooked product is thinned with solvent work together as an integrated system.
