What Is Alkyd?

The word alkyd is derived from alcohol and acid. Alkyd is a synthetic polyester resin formed by the polycondensation of polyhydric alcohols (polyols) with dibasic acids or anhydrides and modified with vegetable oils or fatty acids. The polyester part of the resin contributes to hardness, while the oil and fatty acid part contributes to flexibility, adhesion, pigment wetting and solubility in solvents. Air-drying alkyds use unsaturated fatty acids. Alkyd resin directly affects film formation in paint and varnish systems and is the main component that determines the key properties of the coating film, such as physical and chemical resistance, adhesion and durability.

How Is Alkyd Resin Manufactured?

Alkyd resin is obtained by esterification of polyhydric alcohols and dibasic acids and modification with oils or fatty acids at approximately 200–240 °C. The water formed during the reaction is removed from the process. Alkyd resin production is divided into two methods: the solvent (azeotropic) process and the solvent-free (fusion) process. In the solvent process, the reaction water is separated with a reflux condenser and water separator, whereas in the fusion process it is removed with the help of an inert gas.

With either method, building the plant on a sound process design and selecting the right equipment directly affect product quality and plant efficiency.
