ALCOHOL STORAGE TANK

Unlike conventional storage tanks, alcohol storage tanks and solvent storage tanks are designed for products that can create flammable, combustible and explosive atmospheres. For this reason, these tanks are subject to certain mandatory safety requirements in addition to those for standard storage tanks.

Safety Measures for Alcohol and Solvent Storage Tanks

Taking preventive and mitigating measures in the manufacture and installation of alcohol and solvent storage tanks is both a legal obligation and an important requirement for employee health and operational safety. Possible accidents and damage can be prevented by taking further precautions in addition to the basic measures below:

• The flammability class and hazardous area (Ex zone) classification should be determined according to the flash point of the product, and the design and layout should follow from this.
• All electrical and mechanical equipment should be selected as Ex-proof (ATEX) to suit the zone classification.
• Flame arresters should be fitted to the tank vents and feed lines.
• The tank, pipelines and filling points should be designed and installed so that static electricity is fully earthed.
• A tank deluge (water spray) system should be installed so that the tanks can be cooled when necessary.
• To prevent overheating, the tanks should be insulated or kept indoors.
